Palm Beach County is working on being the first county in Florida to allow you to get emergency services by texting 911, not just calling the number.
County Administrator Bob Weisman told the Palm Beach Post that the goal is to have the system operational here by early next year.
Local governments in 16 other states are already using the service. The FCC has required all cell phone service providers to offer the service by the end of the year.
The commission still advises people to always try to call 911 first and save the texts for emergencies like domestic violence situations when it's not safe to speak.
