You may have noticed most of the big named pet stores don't sell cats or dogs anymore.  Soon, the city of Palm Beach Gardens could make it so that even the smaller stores can't sell the animals.

The city council today will have its first reading on an ordinance that would ban puppy and kitten mills and prohibit the retail sale of dogs and cats.

It would make it so that stores within city limits could not be allowed to display, sell or even give away the pets.  Violators would face fines of $250 for each day that the violation occurs.

Palm Beach Gardens would be just the most recent of several municipalities that have banned cat and dog sales.

Supporters say there are far too many pets at shelters that are in need of good homes.
